Make a stunning DIY fall wreath by painting white sunflowers every color of the rainbow.
A few weeks ago, I was wandering around Hobby Lobby admiring their Fall Collection when I spotted some pretty white sunflowers. It got me thinking about whether it would work to paint silk flowers. I decided to buy some to try it out and by golly, it worked so well! I was able to turn those white sunflowers into a whole rainbow of sunflowers in pretty, muted, autumnal shades.
I absolutely love my new fall wreath. If you want to make one too, here’s how I did it:
Materials Needed
- White Sunflowers (Six Total)
- Wood Bead Wreath (14″ or 18″)
- Craft Paint + Paint Brush
- Glue Gun + Gluesticks
- Scissors
Instructions
Step 1: Choose six colors of craft paint, one color for each flower. Squeeze a little bit of paint into a small cup and mix it with a little bit of water. If the color is darker or more intense, you’ll need to add more water and if the color is lighter, less water is needed. Adding the water helps make the paint go on more smoothly, kind of like a watercolor effect.
Step 2: Paint the petals of each flower, washing out your paint brush in between each color change.
Step 3: Let the flowers dry completely, then use a pair of sharp scissors or tin snips to cut the stems off of each flower.
Step 4: Glue each sunflower to the wood bead wreath. Alternately, you could leave the stems on and use florist wire to attach the flowers to the wreath. It’s up to you! If your wreath gets a lot of hot sun, you may want to use florist wire since sometimes that can melt the hot glue and make your flowers fall off.
And there you have it, a rainbow wreath variation that’s perfect for fall. I am really digging the soft colors and you know I just can’t resist a chance to put things in rainbow order.
Everything in the fall collection at Hobby Lobby is currently 40% off, so you can make this cute wreath for a great price. Head to your local store to grab everything you need, then send me a pic of your finished craft via Instagram or email. I’d love to see your version!

This wreath is SO pretty! I already have some large rings so I’ll just get some beads for the base of the wreath. And because our house faces east, I’ll attach the flowers with the floral wire you mentioned. Actually, because of using the wire, I could just make different colored flowers for a wreath for another season because they would be easy to interchange. Thank you for a great idea and I’ll be heading to Hobby Lobby soon! Have a nice weekend.
