Several years ago I saw someone on a cooking show make these sandwiches called Monte Cristos. They intrigued me because I never in my life would have thought to put jam on a savory sandwich. But I usually like savory/sweet combinations so I found a recipe and gave it a try.
Wow. Wow. Wow. These sandwiches have become a guilty pleasure for me! I love them! They are the perfect combination of salty ham, melty cheese, crunchy fried batter and sweet jam. Yum!
So here’s how I make them…
First, mix up the batter. The recipe is:
2/3 cup water
1 egg
2/3 cup all-purpose flour
1 3/4 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
Then you need to make the sandwiches:
- Deli Ham
- Sturdy White Sliced Bread
- Swiss Cheese Slices
- Raspberry Jam
- Powdered Sugar
- Vegetable Oil for Frying
Dip the sandwiches in the batter on both sides. Then set the sandwich down in hot oil and fry until golden brown. Flip to other side and fry again.
To serve, cut sandwich into two triangles, sprinkle with powdered sugar and top with jam. These are best piping hot.
This is what you will end up with:
I only make them once a year or every couple of years, because obviously they are not the most healthy thing in the world, but oh baby are they delicious. Hope you enjoy! What are your guilty pleasure foods?
