I transformed my neutral farmhouse living room into a colorful, modern and sophisticated space with the help of my beautiful new navy blue velvet sofas from Article.
If you’ve been following along on my Instagram Stories, you know that this makeover has been in the works for several months.
Thank you to Article for partnering with me on this post.
A while back I realized that my living room didn’t really reflect my personality. I LOVE color. I ADORE color. You can tell by my site, my wardrobe and the craft projects I make that I love color! And yet my living room was all neutrals. Have you ever had a similar experience?
So I began looking around for inspiration and that’s when I fell in love with the Sven Sofa from Article. Sleek lines, luxurious velvet all in a rich navy blue color. So much more “me” than shades of khaki and gray!
The sofas were the starting point and everything kind of just came together after that. Want to see my new modern glam living room?
Pitter patter. That’s my heart beating out a rhythm of true love for this new colorful, fun and more modern space.
Let me walk you through some of the details of the room.
First, the sofa. Oh my gosh. Not only is it stylish, but it’s so comfy! I was a little worried about that since I bought them online and couldn’t give them a test drive. But my worries were for nothing. We used to go downstairs to watch TV, but since we got these sofas, the hubs and I stay upstairs and watch Netflix on the laptop… that’s how much we love cuddling up on them! They’re deep and the back cushion is so soft and the velvet is so cozy. They were made for comfort!
About three days after my new sofas were delivered, my kindergartener got nail polish on the arm of one of the couches. I. FLIPPED. OUT. But guess what? A little acetone and it cleaned up perfectly. I have already had to spot clean a few food stains (when will those little rascals learn to stay in the kitchen to eat?!) and they’ve all come up easily with no permanent stains. Hurray! I will say that the downside of such dark fabric is that crumbs and lint show. I just brush them off or vacuum them up if I notice anything, so it hasn’t been too big of a deal.
The rug was my color palette inspiration. It’s a vintage style rug with shades of navy, aqua, hot pink, mustard, white and gray so I tried to pull those colors out in the accessories. Throw pillow covers were a super easy and inexpensive way to accomplish that. I just tried to mix and match color, texture and scale.
One other thing I wanted to mention was that the guys who delivered the sofas went above and beyond. They brought them into the house, set them up and even took the time to put felt pads on the bottoms of the legs to protect my wood floors. It sure is nice to receive quality service!
I struggled with art to go behind the couch. Who knew I was so picky about art?! I looked at hundreds of options online and everything seemed… meh. Or it was a million dollars. Then one day I was perusing my local Target and fell instantly in love with this floral print. It had all the right colors for my room like it was meant to be. The only problem was that it wasn’t quite big enough to fill up the whole wall behind my sofa. So I decided to hang wall sconces on either side. After a lot of drama that I recorded for you on Instagram Stories, I finally settled on mounting them on wood plaques and using cord covers and I am happy to say I love the final look. I’m still brainstorming ways I can get rid of the cords altogether (maybe battery operated lights?) but for now, this works for me.
The sconces fill the space visually and the added light is a huge bonus in this room because there’s no overhead light. (Why did they think that was a good idea in the 80’s?) And the painting plus lights don’t compete with the botanical gallery wall that’s next to it. After all the back and forth, I am happy to say I love how it turned out.
Can we pause for a minute to admire those sleek, sexy legs? Mmm, boy. So good.
If you are ready to move away from farmhouse style, I wholeheartedly recommend the Sven sofas from Article. Sometimes I come into the living room just to stroke the soft velvet. They come in several other colors and a leather version too.
I put together this fun video of the makeover. Check it out!

I luv both the before & the after. They are so different. The before is more me & the after is so much more you!!! Fabulous job! I think we just have too many in our household for me to embrace that much color. But I ..so love color! It just gets overwhelming in my own space.

This is so beautiful and inspiring! I just ordered a navy couch and have been waffling between making the space more neutral or colorful. I love the pop of pink in the pillows! And, where did you find your accent chairs?
Jennifer says
Thanks Kimberly! I got the gray accent chairs from Wayfair.

I love this SO much!!! I bought a white slipcovered couch from Ethan Allen about two years ago and I HATE it. Although I asked for a couch with fabric that could be thrown in the wash that is NOT what I got. I didn’t find out until after I received the couch. I so wish I had gone with something like this.

Please, what color is the wall!
Jennifer says
Hi Debra! The paint color is Sherwin-Williams Rainwashed.

Hi-does the rug have any orange in it?
Jennifer says
No, the rug does NOT have orange. I would say it’s navy blue, gray, aqua, hot pink and mustard.

I LOVE COLOR!! Everyones Farm House look begins to look exactly the same. White, white and more white with Black and White signs chipped furniture everywhere and more white. If people would just add even just a few pops of their favorite colors it could change it up and make their very own personality shine through. This room pops, the before although calming looks like the million others I’ve see. Great job in taking the color leap!

Thank you for this comment Abby. While I really don’t care what others think about my home decor choices, I had A LOT of comments from people that they liked the old living room decor better. 🙁 It did make me a little sad. So THANK YOU for taking the time to share a compliment. You voiced my feelings exactly… give me all the color!

I have 2 of these exact sofas in this color and I couldn’t love them more! I have little kids so I wash the pillowcases often and they come out looking like new! Spot cleaning the sitting cusion works well but once is awhile my kids do a number on them so I removed the staples that hold the tufting in and washed them also. It’s well worth the effort even though you will need a staple gun to get the tufting back in place. Your living room looks fantastic! I always believe your home should reflect your personality and for me color is it! We also did our house siding blue, and painted the front door yellow.

You wash the velvet back cushions? And they come out okay?

Hi! I love what you did with your new living room. What’s the color of your wall? It looks white with a tinge of green?
Jennifer says
Thank you! The wall color is Sherwin-Williams Rainwashed. It is one of those blue/green/gray colors that shifts with the light and I loooooove it.

I have this sofa and used Edgecomb gray and it is really lovely. I can put any colour cushions and decor into my space and it looks fab.

Love this and love the sofa (I bought mine the exact same one and colour in November 2021) I can totally relate to the washed out feed of farmhouse. This couch is fantastic, it is so comfortable and stylish and I highly recommend. I was eyeing it for a few years and finally took the plunge. Love how you have added pink in the cushions and painting. I had cream fur pillows on mine this winter with copper and silver accents for Christmas it was STUNNING. I have two dogs and a furry cat and the fur comes off easily with a lint brush. All in all my most favourite couch ever!

Beautiful! Love your eye for design. Would you please tell me where you got the multiple framed floral pictures on the wall? Thank you.
Jennifer says
Thanks so much! I downloaded the prints from another blogger. They’re free, but you do have to enter your email address to get them. Here’s more info: https://www.thecraftpatchblog.com/botanical-photo-grid/

What did you do for curtains? I happen to have the rug and the painting
Jennifer says
I didn’t have curtains when I did this… we had just put up new window trim and I thought it was too pretty to cover. I have since added white curtains with a subtle grid pattern in them.

Hello! I love the entire room!! Where can I find the area rug? The link no longer works for it. Do you know the brand and/or name of it? Thank you!!
Jennifer says
Fixed the link for you!

I’ve been looking at the Sven sofa, but I’ve read many reviews that say the cushions sag and get lumpy fairly quickly. Can you tell me if you’ve experienced anything like that with yours? Beautiful room. I love how you’ve embraced color!
Jennifer says
We haven’t had problems with sagging cushions. I do have to fluff the back cushions sometimes, but they still look good. The main problem I’ve had is the velvet fabric… I have four kids and at first I thought these would hold up well, but they are hard to scrub without ruining the velvet pile. I would recommend the leather if you have kids.

I love this colour scheme and design! I intend to replicate this the best I can 💜💛🩷🩵💚
The link for the watercolour pink blue cushion is not working, do you know if this is still available? I’m also really interested in how you made the sconces, please.
