Learn how to make an easy Easter wreath out of gold speckled eggs.
Today I thought I’d share a fun and easy Spring wreath tutorial. This Easter egg wreath features brightly colored eggs covered in gold leaf speckles.
I love the mix of bright, fun colors and the sparkle from the gold leaf. The wreath is so pretty hanging on my front door. I’ve seen many egg wreaths in stores, but they are always SO expensive. I figure this is a win-win, because I got to make my wreath exactly how I wanted and it was less expensive.
To make your own Easter egg wreath, you will need:
Materials Needed
- 12 inch Wreath Form (I used a grapevine wreath, but a foam or wire wreath would work too)
- Paper Mache Eggs (I used 48 eggs total)
- Gold Leaf
- Gold Leaf Adhesive (or Mod Podge)
- Craft Paint and Paint Brush
- Hot Glue Gun + Glue Sticks
Instructions
Step 1: Paint all of the eggs. This is a bit tricky since they are round. I painted one side, let it dry, then painted the other side. It took two coats of paint to get good coverage.
Step 2: Use hot glue to attach eggs to the wreath form. I had to use a lot of glue to keep them securely in place since the grapevine wreath is uneven.
Step 3: Apply “speckles” of gold leaf adhesive to the eggs. I used Mod Podge instead, and it worked okay, but I think I would have gotten better results if I had used the adhesive specifically made for gold leaf.
Step 4: Let the adhesive dry until tacky, then gently press a sheet of gold leaf against the eggs. It will stick to the places where there’s adhesive. Let the adhesive dry completely overnight.
Step 5: Gently rub off the extra gold leaf. I used my fingers for most of it, then I used a clean, dry paint brush to dust off the loose flakes. When I was all done, I used a hair dryer to blow off the last stubborn bits of loose gold.
If the gold leafing process seems intimidating to you, I think you could get good results using something like this gold leaf paint instead.
I’m so happy with this pretty wreath. It’s so perfect for Easter and looks fabulous on my front door. Now if the weather would just get the memo that it’s supposed to be Spring!! 😉
