DIY Funny Face Masks

Learn how to add a funny mouth graphic to a DIY fabric face mask using printable heat transfer material and a Silhouette Cameo machine.

When life gets tough, you can either cry or laugh. I choose to laugh. So I thought since everyone is going to be wearing face masks around town for a while, why not make one that’ll brighten someone’s day?!

To add a silly mouth graphic to a fabric face mask, you will need:

Materials Needed

• Silhouette Cameo
• Silhouette Printable Heat Transfer 
• Color Printer
• DIY Cotton Face Mask (Before Adding Pleats)
• Iron
• Clean White Fabric

Step 1: Sew a face mask out of a neutral or skin colored piece of fabric. I used this mask pattern. Stop before the last step where you add the pleats. This makes it easier to apply the vinyl.

Step 2: Search for and/or purchase a mouth graphic that you like and import the image into Silhouette Studio.

Step 3: Use the Trace tool to trace around the outer edge of the image. This adds the cut lines for the machine to read.

Step 4: Adjust the page size to be 8.5″ x 11″ and add registration marks. 

Step 5: Load the printable vinyl into your printer’s paper tray. Double check to make sure it’s loaded the right direction. You want to print on the plain side, NOT the side with the grid lines. Print your design.

Step 6: Adjust the cut settings in Silhouette Studio for printable vinyl. Attach the printable vinyl to a cutting mat, load it into the machine, then send the file to be cut.

Step 7: Peel the excess transfer material away, leaving only your design on the film backing (the part with the grid design).

Step 8: Place the design face down onto your mask with the grid side up. Center the design, then cover it with a piece of fabric. Iron using the cotton setting, pressing firmly for 30-40 seconds. Let the design cool, then peel away the backing paper.

Step 9: Once your design is affixed, sew the pleats onto the sides of your mask.

And there you have it! A silly, lighthearted project… because with all the heaviness in the world right now, why not!

This printable HTV is washable, although with the repeated high heat washes a fabric face mask will be submitted to, it may not last forever. And that’s okay, right? Because it’ll be hilarious while it lasts.
