My son has been obsessed with tractors and heavy construction vehicles since he was in diapers. So I was not surprised when he wanted his sixth birthday to be construction themed.
One of our family traditions is letting our kids dream up any birthday cake they want and then I try to make it for them. I am not a cake decorator, but I am the magic maker for my kids, so I do my darndest to make their birthday wishes come true.
This post is sponsored by Hobby Lobby.
This year my son drew a picture of what he was hoping his birthday cake would look like:
Translation: He wanted a chocolate cake with the number six on it, but the six looks like a road and there’s an avalanche going across the road so construction vehicles are there fixing it.
Oh my goodness. I just about died from the cuteness. What a creative little boy! So you know I had to make his vision come to life.
I headed to Hobby Lobby for some inspiration and discovered that they have a very robust cake decorating section with all kinds of tools and supplies to get creative while baking. When I spotted these chocolate rocks and boulders, I knew I was going to be able to pull this cake off.
I had no idea how I was going to make a road, but then I saw these small packs of fondant and knew the black would totally work for making a road.
I grabbed a few other items I knew I’d need for the cake, as well as some construction party themed decorations and tableware. Here’s everything I ended up with:
So many good finds! Here are the cake decorating supplies I used:
- Black Fondant
- Chocolate Sprinkles
- Twisted Star Tip
- Large Coupler
- Disposable Decorating Bags
- Chocolate Rocks
All of the baking tools marked Sunny Side Up Bakery are always 50% off, so that is good to know!
And here you can see all of the adorable Construction Birthday Party Supplies.
You can watch the video to see how I assembled the cake, but here’s the finished cake next to my son’s drawing:
I think it turned out pretty great for someone who doesn’t decorate cakes! The real test was my son’s reaction.
He LOVED it!
Here’s how the whole table looked:
I put balloons on balloon sticks (no helium needed, yay!) and taped those to the backs of the cardboard vehicle cutouts. I layered a blue tablecloth (my son’s favorite color) with the road table runner and sprinkled candy rocks all down the center. Then I added caution tape on the sides under the construction plates.
And one more close-up of the cake:

Just a personal note… my oldest daughter is a young adult and moved out of the house and my youngest just turned six. Having an adult child while also still having a little one has given me a lot of perspective on motherhood. The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that childhood is so fleeting. I will blink and this little tractor-loving boy will be all grown up. I’ll blink and my years of heavy motherhood will be over. Planning this birthday party was a lot of work. Decorating cakes is not really in my skill set. It was hard for me to do and took so much time. But it is worth it!
The work we do as moms and Magic Makers is worth it. These types of happy family traditions are what will make my kids want to come back home to me when they grow up and move out. Gifting them a stable, happy, love-filled childhood is the greatest work I can imagine. They only get one childhood and I only get one mom-hood and I am sure trying my hardest to make it a great one.
