There’s nothing more American than apple pie, am I right? With Memorial Day just around the corner, I decided to give a colorful update to this classic dessert. Now it will be the perfect festive treat for our big Memorial Day cookout.
I painted the pie top with red and blue stripes! Of all the things I’ve painted over the years, this is the first time I’ve painted a pie. Isn’t it fun?!?
Want to make one too? You will need a frozen lattice top Apple Pie, Reddi-wip, blue and red food coloring and a food-safe paint brush.
I bought all of the supplies at Walmart. The pie is in the frozen dessert section, the Reddi-wip was near the milk and the food color and brush were in the cake decorating aisle.
You’ll also need an egg and a bit of water. Mix one egg yolk with 1 teaspoon water and divide into two paper cups. Add red food dye to one and blue to the other.
Paint the lattice strips with the color wash, then bake according to package directions.
Watch this video to see just how easy it is:
No pie is complete without a dollop of Reddi-wip.
I made small dollops across the pie to look like stars.
But I also added a big dollop to each piece after it was cut and plated, because the more whipped cream the better, in my opinion!
This patriotic apple pie will be such a huge time saver at our upcoming Memorial Day barbecue. I can serve a tasty, festive, classic dessert without spending a ton of time in the kitchen. I call that a win!
