I’m excited to be sharing a free knitting pattern with you today. I was perusing the yarn aisle at Walmart the other day and came across Red Heart Strata yarn and instantly fell in love. It’s almost like t-shirt yarn, but it’s a tube instead of flat strips of knit fabric if that makes any sense. It’s soft and stretchy and squishy and completely delicious yarn! I immediately came home and started working on a boho-inspired scarf.
The pattern itself is simple, but it makes a great fringe-like lace that gives the project a beachy Boho look. Even beginning knitters can handle this pattern!
I created an infinity scarf by sewing the finished scarf ends together to form a circle. It would make an awesome long scarf as well, but you would need to use two skeins of yarn. It would be really fun to finish each end off with fringe. I even think it would be cute as a short fold-over neck warmer with buttons. So many cool possibilities with one pattern!
Are you ready to make your own knitted scarf?
Materials Needed
- Red Heart Strata Yarn, 1 skein
- Size 11 Straight Knitting Needles
Knitting Pattern
Cast on 22 stitches using the long tail cast-on method.
Rows 1-4 : knit all stitches
Row 5: k1 with 3 wraps. Repeat to end.
Row 6: k1 and drop wraps. Repeat to end.
Repeat until the scarf is the desired length. I repeated the six row set 17 times and used the entire skein of yarn. I did want to note that after you knit row six, gently pull on the stitches until the long stitches are even and smooth. It’s a little weird at first, but you’ll get the hang of it quickly.
Here’s a little video so you can see exactly how to work Row 5 and Row 6.
Bind off using your favorite stretchy bind off method or turn it into an infinity scarf by attaching it into one big loop. This scarf would also look fantastic with fringe.
I hope you enjoy this fun knitting project as much as I did. I can’t wait to wear my new scarf!

I am a master crocheter. This is the very first thing I was ever inspired to knit. Gorgeous scarf! I just started it and it is very easy to do. Also, I love your video. Whenever I wat h tutorial videos I look for the shortest ones. I don't need all that talking either so I love that yours is straight and to the point and no annoying chatter! Thank you!

I'm with you on the short videos… that's why I made mine that way, because all the talking bugs me too! And thank you for the kind comment. I'm glad you're taking on a knitting project! I started out as a crocheter, but more and more I find myself wanting to knit because the finished "fabric" is so stretchy and squishy.

Does the longer version look good as well?

Yes, but if you make it longer, I would make it a traditional scarf shape, not an infinity scarf. Personal preference, but I think it would work better.

OMG! it was meant to be and i can’t wait! But i have one question…I have not got access to a size eleven knitting needle but i do have a size 5. Is it in any way possible that i could shrink the pattern to be a size that would work on those needles?
Thank you in advance for your reply and i can’t wait to start on this amazing project!

Sorry, Belle… I wouldn’t recommend changing the pattern in any way unless you are a very experienced knitter. Who knows what size they would turn out!
